MediaTek is preparing to enter the Windows on ARM PC market, currently dominated by Qualcomm. According to reports from China, the chipmaker is developing its own ARM-based processor designed specifically for Windows PCs.
MediaTek may be developing a Windows on ARM processor
Today, the Windows on ARM platform is available with Qualcomm Snapdragon processors. In order to quickly adapt to this market, MediaTek is working on Windows processors based on the existing ARM architecture. It is claimed that this processor will be released next year.
MediaTek’s move comes at a very important time. The agreement between Qualcomm and ARM will end in 2025. After this date, the ARM architecture developed for Windows computers will be open to all companies. MediaTek also wants to make its own processor using ARM chips.
Microsoft is supporting the Windows on ARM initiative to improve ARM devices. Currently, however, Qualcomm Snapdragon X Elite and X Plus are the only options for ARM-based Windows PCs. MediaTek aims to break Qualcomm’s monopoly by offering more options in the Windows on ARM space.
MediaTek’s entry into this market may attract the attention of other manufacturers. Especially laptops and 2-in-1 computers are expected to be updated with ARM-based chips. Even though it is still in the early stages, MediaTek’s claim that it will develop a computer processor has managed to attract attention.
